Time For An AC Check

ac checkSummer is almost here, and it's just about time for an AC check. Getting your AC examined and recharged now, in the early summer before the heat gets unbearable, is the best way to ensure it will work properly all season long.

Starting Things Up

Starting your A/C up for the first time after the winter can be a nerve-wracking experience. A slightly musty smell that quickly dissipates is totally normal; it's also common for your A/C to blow warmer air for a few moments before cool air starts coming through the vent. If either of these lasts longer than a few minutes you should get to the mechanic before the weather really heats up.

Recharge vs Repair

If your A/C isn't running quite right, it may just need a quick recharge. But, if left unaddressed, you could be looking at a much bigger repair. Keep an eye out for:

Hot Air Blowing From The Vents One of the most obvious signs that your compressor is broken is the AC blowing hot air. A damaged or failing compressor cannot properly regulate the flow of refrigerant; as a result, the AC system will not be able to cool the cabin.

Loud Noises When The Compressor Is Running The AC compressor has several interior components and uses a sealed bearing to turn. If any of those interior components break or the compressor’s internal bearings fail, then all sorts of noises can be produced. A worn bearing will produce a high-pitched squealing or grinding sound, while a seized bearing will produce a grinding noise or a noticeable belt squeal. Due to the complexity and nature of how compressors are assembled, it is usually easiest to replace the entire compressor instead of attempting a repair.

Reduced Airflow From The AC vents If your cabin filter is in need of replacement, you might notice reduced airflow when the A/C is running. When the filter is dirty or clogged, as shown above, less air is able to pass through the system. The air that is able to pass through requires more effort than normal which ultimately means that the engine runs less efficiently.

If any of these problems should arise, call your local mechanic for an appointment—whatever you do, don't pick up a quick-fix kit.
