What is an axle seal leak? How much does it cost to repair?

In a recent article, we discussed the common signs of a leaking axle seal. But, once you spot one, what should you do? How urgent is an axle seal repair? When should you call your mechanic? Below we’ll answer those questions.

First: is it safe to drive with an axle seal leak?

The axle seal connects the axle to the transmission and keeps the transmission fluid from leaking. Depending on the size of the leak, it may be okay to drive with a leaking axle seal but you probably won’t get very far. The severity of the leak will affect how safe it is to drive. With significant fluid loss, it's not wise to continue driving. If the leak is small, however, you may be able to drive your vehicle as long as you maintain the proper transmission fluid levels. Your mechanic will be able to gauge the size and severity of the leak, and the urgency of the repair. If you notice any symptoms of an axle seal leak, it’s best to call your mechanic and take your car in for service as soon as possible. If the seal becomes too corroded before it’s repaired, it may cause permanent damage to the transmission.

Fixing an axle seal can cost anywhere from $150 to several hundred dollars, depending on the make and model of your car. If you detect a leak it’s better to fix it sooner rather than later, as ruining your transmission is an expensive repair. A leaking axle seal may be covered by your vehicle’s Powertrain Warranty, so check your car’s brochure to see if this is the case.
