Symptoms of a Bad or Failing A/C Compressor
Now that warmer weather is finally here, it’s time to start thinking about A/C maintenance. The A/C compressor is one of the most important parts of your car’s air conditioning system and, like any other component on a vehicle, it will eventually need to be replaced.
Role of The A/C Compressor
The A/C compressor is responsible for pressurizing and distributing the refrigerant. If there is any problem with the compressor, the rest of the A/C system will be affected. Here are a few common signs that your compressor needs to be serviced:A/C Blowing Hot Air
Blowing hot air is one of the first and most obvious signs that a compressor may be failing. If the A/C is damaged or failing, it won't be able to regulate the refrigerant properly. As a result, the A/C system will not be able to cool the cabin.Loud Noises Coming From The Compressor
Another potential symptom of a failing A/C compressor is loud or unusual noises. Like other accessories driven by the engine’s belts, the compressor has several interior components and uses a sealed bearing to turn. If any of those interior components break or the compressor’s internal bearings fail, then all sorts of noises can be produced. A worn bearing will make a high-pitched squealing or grinding sound, while a seized bearing will make a grinding noise or a noticeable belt squeal. Due to the complexity and nature of how compressors are assembled, it is usually easiest to replace the entire compressor instead of attempting a belt repair.A/C Clutch Not Moving
Another sign of a failing compressor is if the clutch won't move. The clutch on the compressor allows the system to engage and disengage from engine power— that way, the compressor is only turning when it needs to be. If the clutch seizes and stops moving, it will permanently activate the compressor. If it breaks, the compressor won't be able to receive power at all. Sometimes the clutch itself can be replaced, but the most efficient repair usually involves replacing the entire compressor.Repair Your A/C Compressor At V&F
