Alternator Repair
Alternator Repair At V&F Auto in Agawam, MA
Your alternator works alongside your battery to generate power for your car’s electrical components. The engine itself doesn’t generate electricity— it relies on a separate power system for the electrical components. This is known as the charging system. It includes the car battery, a voltage regulator, and an alternator. The alternator converts mechanical energy from the engine to electrical energy using an alternating current, that then travels through voltage regulator. The regulator then sends that power to the battery, adjusting the amount of energy to provide a steady flow of power.
Alternators have a big job to do and lots of small, moving parts that make them work. As an alternator gets dirty or is subjected to extreme temperatures over time, those small parts can wear out, causing the alternator to eventually fail or malfunction
Local Alternator Repair
Alternators usually last between 5-10 years and require little maintenance, unless they’re old and worn out. Much like the battery, some of the most common symptoms of a failing car alternator include:
- Inability to start or trouble turning over the engine
- Dim headlights
- Delayed electrical accessories
- A health battery that needs a constant boost
If issues like these are left unaddressed, your charging system may fail entirely— which could leave you stranded and in need of a tow home.
It’s important to note, that not all alternator repairs will require a total replacement. Some may be fixed by the replacement of adjacent parts, components like the serpentine belt or the battery that can pull energy away and throw off the delicate balance of the alternator. That&rsquo's why it’s important to see a trained, trustworthy mechanic to perform any alternator repairs.
